I'm currently in Japan on business and am looking for royalty free,
Japanese AV, DVDs. Does anyone know what the copyright law age
limitations are for DVDs in Japan? Specifically Adult DVDs?
I've been to a handful of seedy adult dvd shops in Akihabara, Shibuya
and Shinjuku and the store owners have all been unhelpful. They
understand what I am looking for, but are not aware of rules/regulations
surrounding PDDVDs (Public Domain DVD).
I know I can buy rights to Adult DVDs for re-sale, but I am first
interested in finding any adult content that is either public domain,
royalty free or have relatively cheap licenses, i.e. under 100USD. I
would also be amenable to buying someones licensed content provided
there is proof of license and ownership.
Any thoughts/comments/answers are much appreciated.
Cheers.

Found everything I needed here: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_copyright_law) :)
I am still interested in finding content that's royalty free and relatively
inexpensive. If anyone has any leads please advise.

Hmmm, i have been there and bought tons of dvds from those shops, around Kabukicho area, super expensive but all the ones I bought were properly licensed Maria Ozawa dvds cuz everyone knows how much of a freak I am about her LOL
Good luck on your search man, hope you can find what you're looking for

Do you mean the DVDs where legit, or you bought the right to re-distribute the contents on the DVD. I'm looking for the latter.

Ahhh Ok.. You got me all excited :p
I wonder how javmodel etc. get their content. I suspect some of it may be unlicensed.
I have talked to a bunch of people about this now, and the general consensus is that
Japanese Studios won't bother with foreign companies simply because the margin is
too small for the administration costs to be worth it.
Anyway I haven't given up yet...

For that work, you are in the wrong country.
For PD stuff I am confused. I have never heard of public domain unless it is material that goes back 75 years. Have met many producers but none making content to give away...Most of their content is stolen by foreigners.
I believe the atmosphere there is extremely adverse to your plan though now that Tokyo is out of 2016 Olympics race...they may lighten up a bit.
Anything you would find would have to be censored. uncensored would end them and probably you in jail if authorities were alerted.
be safe

I was curious to know if there was any PD, but you're absolutely right - there's no material that goes back 70+ years.

Well the pink salons etc are definely going to survive another day. Not sure about censorship though. I believe this to be somewhat of a different story. None-the-less it may help.

The plan is to do it legitimately, even if it means only censored content - if I can't even do that then I'll seek other opportunities.
Thanks for your comments...
Cheers!

Speaking Japanese will help. Sounds like you do speak Japanese.
Then usually, Japanese look for track records. Or people you commonly know.
You have to have someone who can vouch for you, that means something to them. I can assure you there is no quick way unless you have $200-300k to start. If you do, look me up, I can connect you for a cut.
